Popular Ghanaian dancehall artiste, Emmanuel Andrews Samini known in showbiz
as Samini has launched a solar project aimed at distributing one million solar
lanterns mostly to deprived communities in the country for free in Accra.
The project, being executed by the Million Lives Foundation, was
out-doored as “Samini lights a million lives” at the launch yesterday. The
launch took place at the 2006 MOBO Award winner’s restaurant, Dancestardom.
Speaking at the launch, Samini said that the project was meant to
promote the use of solar energy in the country.
The foundation, which is partnering with some companies including
Ecotech Green Limited, to build an assembling plant that would spearhead the
distribution and by extension create jobs, was born out of the artiste’s dream
to establish an enterprise where he could use sunlight to generate light for
use.
He noted that the lanterns would be distributed mostly to communities
in the northern part of the country that do not have access to electricity. The
distribution will be preceded with a national sensitization concert that will
be done in every city in the country.
Throwing more light on the beneficiaries of the project, Samini said, “Beside
these communities, the project is also targeting schools and medical centres
across the country to assist them with light whenever there is a power-cut.
The project is part of activities to mark the 10th Anniversary of the
Linda hit maker in the music industry
The Executive Director for the project, Mr. Paul Boateng noted that the
lantern was durable and comes with a two year warranty and it was designed to
also use cell battery in event that there is no sunlight for days.
